The final animation

The final animation can be viewed here

Evaluation

For this project I was put into a group mixed of 3D designers and Graphics Designers, our task was too create a design that makes use of typography taking into account the cameras, visuals and sound. Each of these elements need to mix with one and another. From the start the concept we wanted to develope upon was sound. We aimed to experiment with how sounds could manipulate how the typography is shown.

Our first idea was to create a comic styled design, where we would take a animation/movie clip, whether it be from a film or elsewhere and the aim was to try and write out all of the sound effects, for example if there was the sound of an explosion then a word the sounds like the explosion would show (BOOM, BLAM etc.). From this feedback however it turned out that we would need to gain permission to use someone elses movie clip or create our own fotage, plus the word at the moment of time was too industry based. So from this we started asking people from Yotube if we could use their fotage.

As we got further into the project our idea started to move away from the comic idea but still keeping the the concept of sound. Eventually our idea turned to seeing how music/sound would be altered by the acoustic of the letterform, so for example how the sound/music will change if the type is a serif or sans-serif font. When then included the idea that the camera could fly through the letterforms, going inside the letters as well as around.

And thus came this design, the animation was created through the use of 3D Studio Max, with a mental ray render. making this in this software allowed us to try and make the texuture realistic and add a line to make the camera follow. Lighting was added to add a soft shadow and to illuminate the scene. The Sounds used where recorded using a variety of peoples voices, to focus on how different people pronounce the letters.

Overall I am rather pleased with the results, We have experimented with how sound sounds in different enviroments and so we could get an idea of how the sounds change within the letterform. We focused upon the typography within the final scene and the use of the camera motion travelling through the scene and the letterforms themselves. The textures of the letters look realistic in my own opinion and the lighting is positioned correctly (not overwhelming but not too dark either).

However if more improvements could have been made I would suggest to my group that more recordings from people could have been used as it does at some points get repetative. Also I still had issuses with the camera motion, I tried to make the motion as smooth as possible by altering the path that the camera follows, unfortunately this was the best I could get from it.

To sum up I would say this project was very successful and would work well in the the chosen target audience area. The final design looks relatively realistic, yes theres always improvements needed but I am happy with the results.

The Final scene

Heres a Single render shot of the scene for our typograhpy project, i tried to aim for a realistic texture on the letters and also the background. From the feedback there needed a background for our scene, however we didnt want to have a background at first as we wanted the type to be the main attention, nothing else distracting.

I have also included one of the animations with in the scene to show how the camera shall travel throughout the scene, the animation can be viewed here

Tests for comic conversion design

Before we decided to drop the comic conversion idea I did some videos of tests of how the sound could react to the word and how the moving image could fit in with the typography too. Some have sound some do not, links are below:

Achoo

Clang

Developement on Work

From the feedback we have recieved from presentations our idea has developed alot from the comic conversion design. Our Concept is still based upon the subject of sound however we have left aside the comic soundwords design as this was to industry based.

Instead we have developed the idea of experimenting with the acoustics of letterforms, so for example the letter 'O' would it echo?, would it be very loud or soft? and just how the sound would get manipulated by the letter form.

We discussed about the issues of which fonts, styles, colours etc we should use. We decided that we will use a mixture of serif and san-serif typography as we suspect that both styles would make different manipulations to the sound. We shall try to make the letters as realistic as possible and see if we can make the sound change to the material too, for example if the letter 'O' had a metalic effect then it would make a metallic sound.

As one of the 3Ds of the group I created an animation with how the camera could pass through the letter and you can see the clip here

Motion Graphics-The Definition

Motion Graphics has been used at least since 1960 when the pioneer of computer filmaking John Whitney named his new company Motion Graphics.
Motion Graphics has been considered a speciality skill. normally handled by artists, that concentrate on designing for television broadcasts or films.
within the next 10 years the majority of graphic designers will work with timed-based medi.
Non narrative, non-figurative based visuals are motion graphics

FILMS
Films do contain motion Graphics however very few are considered to be motion graphics

VISUAL EFFECTS
primarily concerned with creating special effects that look realistic, while motion graphics server a purpose more ambiguous - one more akin to graphics design.

CHARACTER ANIMATION
both traditionally 2d and 3d character animation can be used within motion graphics, but usually aren't motion graphics in themselves. Significant use of graphic design principles or stylization can blur the lines between traditional animation and motion graphics.
*Character animations are becoming more realistic nowerdays.

Retro Examples
-Saul Bass designed the title sequence for the motion picture 'The Man with the Golden Arm'

Alfred Hitchcock 'Vertigo', 'Psycho': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tek8QmKRODw&NR=1

Music Videos
use alot of motion Grpahics (kinetic Typography
Gnarls Barkley Example

MOTION GRAPHICS TIPS

ELIMINATE THE NEGATIVES- Dont be scared to ask the clients what they dont want

CORRECT COLOUR FIRST- always use basic colour correction first, make the blacks BLACK!

BE FLEXIBLE- Dont be afraid to kill off an idea, even if it sounds great, if its not fitting the brief start again

TRY SOMING NEW: move away from the subject matter.

PLAN THE EDIT- Masp the path of the story from start to finish.

MAKE IT FLOW- always should be a sense of flow dont make your work look cheap

GLOWS- glow effects give a slight glare to the scene and slightly softens edges.

VISUAL INTETREST- Dont leave the user with a blank scree, always have something there

Test with the comic Sound Words

Here is a quick idea of what I mean by the design I would like to approach, of course more detail would be applied but this is just a test.

Comic Research- Music/sound

Because of the idea i have thought of I will need to take into account about the sound that will be playing throughout the design. As the sound word effects are mainly base upon ambience sounds i feel as if using music in the background could slightly take away the impact of the typography, however it could also add to the impact as this might make the target audience imagine the sound themselves as long as the typography's design and emphasis has been taken into consideration greatly.

Comic Research Again

Just look around i found a website that does focus on how to make comics and tips for how its layed out, even though im just researching about the sound word effects and mainly the typography but i liked how they explain about how the typography is based upon sound so there is no fixed spelling and can be as informal as possible. Plus the design and emphasis in add when making the typography need to be taken into account considerably as this is the main thing that would give it the 'Punch'.

further research on comic typography

The idea I thought of before with using the text to emphasise the sound within an moving image i decided to research further into as i liked the idea so much. Comics use 'sound words' like Bang, Boom and whack!, I found out that I could relate this style to the Pop Art Movement as comics are based upon the movement.

So going deeper into my research I have looked at artworks that are considered Pop Art but still use typogralhy to create more of an impact on the audience. One of the most famous artworks like this is 'Whaam!' by Roy Lichtenstien.
As you can see the use of the WHAAM! sound word creates such an impact which is needed as theres no sound or music that would back up the image. I would like to incorporate this style into our work but add to it further by making the typography out of the actual material, for example with this image I could make the Whaam! look like fire or like small explosions in the shape of the letters.

research Ideas- Comic

while researching for ideas for our design one that popped into my head was comics, how they have word sounds like BANG or KABOOM and crazy stuff. One idea could possibly be something like an everyday event such as walking to work/school/uni etc. and the sounds having words.

For example if there is road works and a drill is being used, the sound is like a 'Drrrrrrrrrrrrr' so something like that could appear as well as the sound to emphasise the ambiance sound. Could even make it so the text itself is spelt from broken peices of concrete and have it vibrate/crack, just react to the sounds.

The main inspiration i got this idea from was mainly just this AMAZING FILM: Scott Pilgrim vs the World: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEgscdJO6H0

So looking further into the Comic/Pop art style i visited other places that used this style such as
Beano: http://www.beano.com/
Even certain games use this style such as XIII: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqc3t5mj1YE

At a later time i might try and make a quick design to show what i mean in better detail

Until next time cya
